Isn’t the problem that Joker is pretty much in a weird love thingie with Batman? The whole gloating and pushing him to his limits is the point xD
I never really liked this interpretation tbh.
I think he’s obsessed, not in love. He sees Bats as his foil, his opposite, and he cannot win by simply killing him. He has to push him over the edge.
