I don’t think there is enough evidence to suggest that it is the size alone that contributes to them being fucked up. Most sizable countries today didn’t start out as democracies, so they never had the chance to not be fucked up. (And I would argue US for instance never really was a modern democracy to begin with)
There are a lot of small countries just as fucked up or even more so. I think it has much more to do with what values and ideologies countries were formed with that impact how fucked up they are.
A European Republic would only ever be borne out of democratic processes and not by force. I do believe a European Republic could be the first (truly) democratic super power.
Freely admitted the size thing is purely a messy heuristic that sprang into my mind unbidden, backed by nothing and entirely unprovable. And yet, just as too much money tends to ruin things, I think too much land and labour under one roof might have a similar effect, or the same effect by proxy.
Yeah I understand where you’re coming from. Maybe I am also too much of an optimist. I hope not, because I believe if Europe and other democracies around the world don’t band together we might be in for a rough ride.
I think we are regardless, but then again my whole life has been a series of mounting realisations of how fucked we are, so maybe don’t take me too seriously. Who was it that said “don’t let the bastards grind you down”?

Fair enough. Great times!
